Currently, the rookery is fragile and exposed to predators. We are working in conjunction with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Department of Environmental Resource Management to create a habitat where birds can thrive.
In 2023, a permit was issued for enhancements to the rookery, including:
Although the homes that will be built in the new neighborhood are farther from the rookery than the existing homes, and birds are adapted to human presence, GL Homes is committed to ensuring a peaceful habitat for our bird neighbors. Once we begin building, our plan to maintain a tranquil environment includes:
These combined efforts ensure that the rookery island’s habitat is preserved and enhanced.
GL Homes has also provided bonneted bat preservation. While no bonneted bats roost on the property, they do fly over the property and eat insects. GL Homes is using Best Management Practices (BMPs) recommended by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the Florida Bonneted Bat (FBB) to support the bat’s foraging and social activities.
